Going to the Chiropractor is a new experience for many of us. Maybe we’ve heard through a friend or have done some research online. It’s possible that you are just fed up with living in pain and it’s time to do something about it. In either case, your first visit to the chiropractor will really be about getting to know the chiropractor and discussing your history, current condition and goals.

As with any doctor’s visit, you’ll start by finishing some new patient paperwork. Upon meeting with the doctor, you’ll discuss your concerns and expectations as well as have the chance to ask any questions you may have. We will perform a physical examination, to include range of motion, palpation and kinesiology (muscle testing)  to see what your current state is. Once this is complete, we’ll take a look at the overall results of our conversation and the exams. Together, we’ll come up with a plan of action which will begin when you are completely satisfied and ready to move forward.

COMPLEX EXAMINATION

Stretching and massage may only temporarily relieve the pain, because the cause has not been addressed. A chiropractic adjustment focuses on correcting the cause. While results cannot be guaranteed, many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing appropriate chiropractic care.

I decide to do a Complex Examination when the patient tells us that they were involved in an automobile accident, a work related injury, or some other type of trauma that may make their case more complicated. X-rays may or may not be indicated, and an attorney may be involved. This examination is similar to a First Visit examination, however more detailed in every aspect.

NEURO EMOTIONAL TECHNIQUE

Whenever our body has aches, pains and unexplained symptoms without trauma, there is always a reason for these conditions. Many times patients say that they think they just slept wrong; that is almost never the correct answer/cause. NET has helped many of my patients with a variety of conditions/symptoms: headaches, phobias, anxiety, self-sabotaging behaviors, fear of flying, body aches/pains, and more. Again, kinesiology is used to detect and correct any imbalances found doing the NET protocol.

NET was developed by Dr. Scott Walker around 1988; it is a mind-body technique that uses a methodology of finding and removing neurological imbalances related to the physiology of unresolved stress. NET is a tool that can help improve many behavioral and physical conditions.

It is important to note that NET does not cure or heal the patient, but rather, NET removes blocks inside of our body, allowing the body to repair itself naturally and return to homeostasis.

NEURAL ORGANIZATIONAL TECHNIQUE

If you have ever been in an accident that was significant to have jolted your body (auto, bicycle, horse, major slips or falls), your body’s holographic image of itself may be shifted. This can result in misjudging spacial dimensions, and for example, you may be bumping into stationary objects, or have a lack of balance. This treatment technique has about 600 neurologic tests. You may need part of the series, or you may need the entire technique. The entire service takes 6 hours to complete and is administered in multiple sessions. Includes the adjustment.

This technique was developed by Dr. Carl Ferreri and it is one of the most powerful techniques I have ever been exposed to. When our body isn’t functioning at its optimum potential, my first question is always, WHY? If stress (physical, chemical, emotional) causes our Nervous System to get out of alignment and malfunction, how can we get the Nervous System to function normally again? The N.O.T. protocol, using kinesiology (muscle testing) as a tool is broken down into five sections and within some of these areas there are sub categories. The title for each category is:

  1. N.O.T. Basic Procedure

  2. Cranial Injury Complex

  3. T.M.J. Function
    a. Digestive Jaw
    b. Defensive Jaw
    c. Structural Jaw

  4. Adaptive Reactive Muscle System in Idiopathic Scoliosis

  5. Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities

The key to this technique, is the doctor. I say this because sometimes this technique must be done standing, sitting, or lying down. The lights may need to be on or off and then work in the dark, and sometimes the eyes may have to be open or closed. As you can see having the correct trained practitioner with their expertise comes into play. I was trained by Dr. Ferreri in 1988.

Sports Injury

Dr. Sherwin has done extensive training in Applied Kinesiology, and prior to becoming a chiropractor he was a professional masseuse. Dr. Sherwin has worked with professional athletes (from football, basketball and cycling) and has been an avid athlete himself since childhood. Having won the Best Defensive Player for the 1966 Los Angeles City Basketball Tournament, Dr. Sherwin injured his knees shortly after high school ending his potential career. Due to his injury, Dr. Sherwin was determined to learn more about knee and shoulder injuries.

If you are in pain or hurting and you can’t partake in the sports you enjoy, you should call Dr. Sherwin. Many people play through their pain, which makes them more prone to increased injury or having an injury that just doesn’t go away.

If there is pain whenever you exercise and there was no trauma, know that there is always a reason for that pain. This is one of Dr. Sherwin’s strengths, being able to figure out why you hurt. Do yourself a favor and don’t put off getting better/pain free when you exercise.

Orthotics

Orthotics are a great way to help with issues related to walking and alignment. Some of these include but are not limited to knee, and lower back pain. The need for orthotics is often related to an issue with the natural functioning of the foot. Orthotics will often help to support the bones within the foot and ankle and therefore take pressure off other parts of the body such as the back, neck, shoulders and hips. In addition, orthotics will help with distributing your weight properly and take further pressure off of toes, bunions and other parts of the foot.

Orthotics are really for anyone with an issue or discomfort relating to walking or imbalances in the body that are known to cause related pain. The great benefit of orthotics is that they can be worn on a daily basis and be utilized during most activities to take further stress off the body.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

There is a saying, “You are what you eat”. If you eat what is considered healthy food then you should be healthy, and if you consume a lot of unhealthy, junk food you may be prone to symptoms like aches and pains. So what is a healthy diet? Consider that there must be 1001 different diets out there just waiting for another person to try it. Sometimes they work and more than not there is disappointment in the desired results. Why is that you may ask?

Are you exactly like the person who developed the diet? Is their stress similar to the stress that you have? These are just a few things to consider when you want to lose weight, or start a health regime that includes diet. No two people are exactly the same!

I have found that depending on the diet, many people have a difficult time trying to make a drastic change in their eating habits. I consult with my patients and I ask them to keep a week long journal of everything they put into their mouth. Not just to list pasta, or salad, but to list every ingredient in every dish. For a salad I would like to see: (example only) romaine lettuce, sunflower seeds, carrots, beets, thousand island dressing. When the patient brings in their list we test using kinesiology (muscle testing) as to which foods their body may or may not like. Either the food is not of a high enough quality for their digestive system or it may be causing inflammation internally which can lead to aches and pains. I have found over the years that people can remove a few items much easier than changing their entire diet. Removing the allergen foods may last for different periods of time for each person.
